Children choose 10 out of 14 days to read. (The idea behind four days off is to allow for extracurricular and other family activities.)
Children collect pledges from sponsors on reading journal logs.
-
Sponsors are asked to pledge the child at a flat rate amount for their Reach For the Stars: reading efforts. Sponsors are encouraged to give
their fundraising pledge money when signing, but they may also ask the student to return after the reading period to collect the pledge.
- Example for choice #1 The Book Option for 110% return:
70% of the collected money will go to the student in the form of books, 10% is used for prizes and 30% will go to
the organization or school in the form of books or cash. That is 110% return!
(These percentages may be adjusted a little by the school or organization.)
- Students will receive 70% in FREE BOOKS with the pledge money collected!!!
Example: $20.00 Pledge money collected by a student x 70% = $14.00
$14.00 in FREE BOOKS for the student to keep!!!
- Fundraiser Student Prizes:
- First, remember every participant receives a book (or several books). (see #4 above)
- Second, every student who completes the 10-10-10 challenge receives an additional prize book. To complete this fundraiser challenge
the student collects $10 from 10 different sponsors and reads 10 days.
- Third, three individual school prizes are given for
- the most minutes read,
- the most pledges collected,
- and the most sponsors pledged!

What does Aliterate mean? Is it applicable to your child?
Aliterate means a person who can read but is disinclined to derive information from literary sources. They have an ability to read but no motivation, in fact an indifference
toward reading.
While the country has focused on literacy, many people are unfamiliar with the word aliterate. Sure your child can read. Maybe he or she even reads three levels
above their grade. But are they excited about reading? Do they ask to go to the library or the movies? When they get home from school, is it "check my
email - see who is online" or "cuddle up with a great book"?
We are in a different world today. Our movies have great
high tech scenes, blow em up, explode, etc. I wondered recently if teens would enjoy the movies Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights because in today's
world one would think nothing happens in those movies except alot of facial expressions. Would those movies entertain?
We have the same problem with many of todays books. Our school fundraiser idea addresses aliteracy by providing children with exciting books where they will
not be bored. Look for Knight Quest where you will learn a little about King Arthur while figuring out the answers to puzzle questions provided. No bored
children here.
My son was a little unenthusiastic about reading until he discovered the lift the flap books. Then he wanted the next book each time a new one was released!
We just need to find the right area of interest for each child and the enthusiasm will follow. Good books offer adventure, exploration, thrills, imagination,
creativity and a window to a new world out there.
Our school fundraiser idea also gives children a choice. Not only will they take home books by participating but they get to choose their title so you know
they will be enthusiastic to read it. Turning the TV off and surrounding them with exciting books will cure aliterate children. Solve aliteracy and hopefully,
next road trip, children will be asking to bring some books instead of their game boy!
